Why Should You Have Your Gas Fireplace Serviced

At Flowertown Gas Fireplace and Chimney Service, one of the most common questions we get is whether or not a customer really needs to have their fireplace serviced. The two biggest reasons for doing so are appliance reliability and safety. Failure to do so could result in the production of lethal carbon monoxide gas, which is odorless and requires special equipment to detect. With proper maintenance and regular checks, you can enjoy the warmth of your gas hearth system with confidence and peace of mind.

SC Works Trident once again took a two-pronged approach to aggregate more job seekers into the area’s hiring pool, with one being hosting an event designed to demonstrate that the job market is accessible to everyone. The conventional job fair for the public took place, also providing those with disabilities an opportunity to meet with hiring managers.

The Disability Employment Resource Expo & Job Fair at the Vocational Rehabilitation Center in Moncks Corner on October 8 was well-attended.

It started at 10:30 a.m. and within 15 minutes, the center’s large gathering area was filled. The hum of pleasant chatter filled the room from the start, indicating that such an event is a vital avenue for job seekers and employers.

“It’s very important that there is a need for more workers. It benefits both the economy and cities and towns. This is a big event, and we try to push to get people to come,” said Dave Tam, from the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce, an agency that was an organizer of the job fair. "My focus is on bridging the gap between the employer and job seeker.”

The gap is somewhat wider for those seeking stable, well-paying employment. Well-represented at the employment event were individuals with disabilities. Their sign language interpreters accompanied some, while others used wheelchairs to visit the various tables where employers were set up.

The Vocational Rehabilitation Department, a state agency, focuses on establishing relationships between hiring managers with open positions and those with challenges.

“Our primary focus is to help individuals with disabilities find and maintain employment,” said Kevin Clemmons, the business specialist for the Vocational Rehabilitation Department. “We also help make jobs available and employment accessible to everyone.”

Businesses in the private sector and local government agencies were meeting with job seekers on the floor. More than 15 employers and community partners attended the fair, and almost every table had conversations in progress. What’s more, the month of October is the National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

“It’s very impactful. Sometimes people with disabilities think they don’t have enough to offer an employer, and that is not the case,” Clemmons said. “They can be just as valuable to an employer as anybody else. We want them to understand that value and show them that they can contribute.”

Another ribbon is cut and another home is dedicated on Hutchinson Lane in Moncks Corner. On Aug, 22, the keys were handed over to Kristina Young, a single mother who was, for years, living in a converted garage, according to Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County.

“We are honored to welcome the Young Family home,” said April Elswick, Volunteer Coordinator and Construction Project Manager of Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County. “Each home dedication is a celebration of community, hard work, and hope. This is what Habitat is all about – bringing people together to build homes, communities, and brighter futures.”

The newest home owner is Kristina Young, a single mother who, according to Habitat for Humanity, had to overcome a lot of obstacles to get her and her kids into a new home.

“I’m so excited for my kids to have their own room. I’m excited to cook in my own kitchen. But mainly, I’m excited that my kids will have their own space to be themselves and have their own areas,” said Young to the Habitat of Humanity of Berkeley County.

This home marks Berkeley Habitat's 4th home on Hutchinson Lane. And it wouldn’t happen without the volunteers and sponsors that include:

Coastal Community Foundation, Pinnacle Financial Partners, Mychael G. Smith, LLC, Lowcountry Current, Quoizel, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Moncks Corner Water Works, ADC Engineering, Shine Construction, Thorne, GJS Architecture, Lawrence Construction, Knight’s Companies, Bathfitter, Levolor, Whirlpool, Ring, and HDR | LOC.

Habitat has been busy. The last home dedicated on Hutchinson Lane was not that long ago in March of 2025. It was for a single homeowner who is admired by many in her community.

tephanie Smith was adopted at young age and lived in a home with 18 other siblings. Throughout her life was given challenges as her parents taught her life skills.

For the past 14-years she was been living with the help of a residential program for those with disabilities. But she had goals the first was to get a car and a driver’s license, she did that. The next one was to become a homeowner and on March 6, 2025, with the help from volunteers from Habitat for Humanity she was given the key to her new home.

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCSC) - The Moncks Corner town council approved a $5 million town square redevelopment plan after decreasing the initial scope of the project.

The project would bring the construction of new buildings to Unity Park in the town square and public improvements, including lighting and landscaping across the town. The new buildings in a renovated Unity Park will consist of 58 one and two-bedroom apartments and a commercial area on the bottom with a new restaurant in each building.

The redevelopment plan is in conjunction with a proposed tax increment financing district, also known as a TIF district, which would use the increase in property tax revenue to finance the improvements. This would be the first time Moncks Corner has had a TIF district. The goal of the redevelopment plan and creating a TIF District together is to stimulate economic growth.

Moncks Corner Mayor Thomas Hamilton says the redevelopment will add foot traffic to the town and will benefit both new and old businesses in the area.

“If you come down to downtown Monck’s Corner on a Saturday afternoon, it’s pretty much empty,” Mayor Hamilton says. “If you get apartments, you’ll have people right there at downtown that will go shop at these different restaurants.”

Unity Park will also be rebuilt with a new amphitheater that will hold town events. Officials say this means Main Street doesn’t have to shut down every time an event is held.

Officials say the plan is going to create more jobs through private investment and grow the tax base in the area. They say not redeveloping would possibly cause a decline in property values.

“There’s going to be a couple different suites for the commercial suite so it can be a nail salon, a restaurant, an office, it could be something like that,” Justin Westbrook, Moncks Corner community development director, said. “And so it provides a little bit more stock for commercial in downtown at an affordable price point.”

The redevelopment covers hundreds of acres surrounding East Main Street, South Live Oak Drive and Rembert Dennis Boulevard.

The plan initially cost $39 million and included a $25 million wellness center, but the plan stalled last month after the Berkeley County council and the Berkeley County School District denied moving forward because of limited details regarding the proposed TIF district. Since then, the plan has decreased to ensure it can go through and that the town starts seeing payback sooner rather than later.

“When they turned us down on the recreation center, we understood,” Mayor Hamilton says. “They have to be comfortable with their numbers, but we always work well together and we’re hoping that we can get this across the finish line as well.”

Officials want to make sure the community knows that the parts they love about Unity Park are staying, including the bricks and the statues.

“We’re not just a 9 to 5 crowd,” Westbrook said. “We’re not just a lunchtime crowd, but we can continue that and parlay that and maybe mimic other towns that have seen it become more of a town and we really do believe in the Lowcountry’s hometown. This allows us to capitalize that and enhance that.”

Proposed zoning amendment, Moncks Corner, SC, August 19, 2025 (STYO)

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV) — The Moncks Corner Town Council had a first reading on Tuesday for a zoning amendment looking to create new development along U.S. Highway 52.

Developing company STYO is looking to turn 30.3 acres of land into a mixed-use development for residential housing, businesses, and recreation.

The parcel of land is along U.S. 52, across from Berkeley Electric Cooperative. It is currently zoned as Planned Development - Commercial. The application looks to rezone the land to Planned Development.

The development, called Village Square, would be broken into three districts.

'The Cottage District' would be exclusively for residential, single-family detached homes with a maximum of 80 units, and a minimum lot size of 3,000 square feet.

'The Market Village' is a mixed-use district for a variety of residential and business purposes. According to the Planned Development (PD) in the city council's agenda packet, "Permitted uses include residential, hotel, restaurant, bar, retail, financial, fitness, service, and office activities. Commercial uses that are not permitted include tobacco and vape stores, adult stores, convenience stores, pawn shops, gas stations, and storage units."

'The Civic Park' district is described as an asset to Moncks Corner's community and would be dedicated to the town upon completion. The district includes two ballfields, basketball courts, pavilions, and more.

Mayor Thomas Hamilton Jr. spoke positively of the plan, noting the town's current need for more recreational space for the growing population.

"We need rec," Hamilton Jr. said. "Next spring, we're looking at restricting how many kids we can sign up because we're out of room. So, projects that bring something like two ball fields, basketball, pavilion, and bathrooms that all residents can use, I can get behind. So, I think it's a high-quality project."

Community Development Director Justin Westbrook, who presented the PD to council, says the developer is looking to implement design and architecture that is quality, "uniquely Moncks Corner, and overwhelmingly Lowcountry," and not considered run-of-the-mill.

"This council and myself we take development very seriously," said Hamilton Jr. "We don't want to grow just to grow, we want to grow right. We want to grow where our citizens have something of value. Not just a bunch of traffic... You can't stop all growth, but we can pick projects that are good for the town of Moncks Corner."

Town staff and the Planning Commission recommended approval; the council unanimously approved the first reading.

No timeline for the development was mentioned in Tuesday's meeting.

South Carolina law requires local governments to conduct at least two public hearings before entering a development agreement.
