There's something alluring about chimneys - whether they're old or new, they have an inherent charm that adds architectural flair to your home. Perhaps more importantly, fireplaces keep you and your family warm and cozy during cold South Carolina winters. Who doesn't love gathering in front of the fire with friends to enjoy a fun board game or a few rounds of drinks?
Anyone who owns a chimney should most certainly enjoy it. But you should know that your chimney isn't there to simply make your house look special - its primary role is to keep you and your family safe. In fact, when you're relaxing in front of a cozy fire with your favorite book, your chimney is hard at work making sure the fire's harmful fumes are directed up and away from you and your home.

Keeping Your Home Safe with Gas Fireplace Maintenance in Summerville, SC
Gas fireplaces are one of the most common features of homes in South Carolina and bring a special ambiance to any room. As with any appliance in your home, however, it's important to keep your gas fireplace maintained throughout the year.
It is crucial to have your gas hearth appliances serviced annually. At Flowertown Gas Fireplace and Chimney Service, our team of experts will thoroughly clean, service, and inspect your gas hearth appliance, as well as perform any necessary repairs. If you notice black soot on your logs or they are not burning cleanly, it is imperative to shut down the appliance to schedule gas fireplace maintenance or repair ASAP.
It's important to note that your gas logs should only be serviced and repaired by a certified gas specialist from the NFI or National Fireplace Institute. There's nothing wrong with hiring a friend, but if they don't know what they're doing, your safety may be at risk.

Why Should You Have Your Gas Fireplace Serviced
At Flowertown Gas Fireplace and Chimney Service, one of the most common questions we get is whether or not a customer really needs to have their fireplace serviced. The two biggest reasons for doing so are appliance reliability and safety. The truth is it's very important to adhere to the manufacturer's guidelines and have the system inspected and serviced annually by a certified gas specialist.
Failure to do so could result in the production of lethal carbon monoxide gas, which is odorless and requires special equipment to detect. Additionally, gas leaks and improper venting can pose serious hazards, which is why inspection of the venting system, chimney, and fireplace is imperative. With proper maintenance and regular checks, you can enjoy the warmth of your gas hearth system with confidence and peace of mind.
If you haven't kept up with gas fireplace maintenance and believe something is wrong with your hearth or chimney, consider gas fireplace repair in Summerville, SC.
What About Un-Vented Gas Fireplaces?
Heating systems that don't require vents are like regular home heating systems. But they need to be working properly and checked often. It's a good idea to open a window if you're using a vent-free heater. There are rules about when you can use them. It's a good idea to have an expert check your heater's location. Sometimes, people don't know how to use their fireplace or heater correctly - and that's OK. At Flowertown Gas Fireplace and Chimney, we're happy to answer questions and give you tips so you can safely enjoy your gas fireplace.

Common Signs You Need Gas Fireplace Repair
Whether you have a vented or un-vented gas fireplace, it's important to know when you need maintenance or repairs. Keep these signs in mind, especially as you approach fireplace season.

Burning Smells
If you detect any unusual odors emanating from your gas fireplace, it is important to take action. While some odors may not be a cause for concern, the smell of gas or burning wires should be taken seriously. To ensure your safety, turn off the fireplace and immediately open windows to let in fresh air. Be sure to also call a certified chimney sweeping company like Flowertown to repair and resolve any further issues. In the event of a suspected gas leak, evacuate your home immediately and dial 911 for assistance.

Your Gas Fireplace Turns On and Off
If your custom gas fireplace is turning on and then quickly turning off, this is a serious issue that requires immediate attention. There can be multiple reasons for this malfunction, so it's best to contact a trustworthy chimney sweep in South Carolina who specializes in gas fireplaces. Turn off the unit and wait for the technician to arrive to prevent any further damage.

Buildup of Soot
It's normal to wipe off soot from various areas of your fireplace while you're cleaning. However, if you notice excessive amounts of soot, you're dealing with an underlying problem that needs professional attention.

Pilot Light Malfunctions
If your gas fireplace's pilot light is not working properly, it could indicate a potential issue with the wiring, gas valves, or thermostat. Keep an eye out for any inconsistencies in its performance.

Essential Wood Burning Fireplace Safety Tips
Having a wood fireplace is a wonderful addition to any home, but it needs to be maintained and repaired, or else it can be very hazardous to your family. Try following these safety tips when enjoying your wood stove or fireplace.

Keep a Fire Extinguisher Nearby
To increase the likelihood of effectively controlling a fire and preventing it from spreading, it is important to have a fire extinguisher nearby. This can significantly reduce the response time in the event of a fire, as every second counts.

Look for Chimney Cracks
Try to regularly inspect your chimney for any cracks, obstructions, or signs of damage. Cracks can be particularly dangerous, as they can allow heat, smoke, and harmful gases to escape into your home. Cracks can also serve as an entry point for water, which can be particularly harmful.

Talk to Your Family
To ensure safety around your wood burning fireplace, it's essential to educate your family, especially kids, about the potential hazards of fire and the importance of responsible behavior. By teaching them wood fireplace safety measures, you'll create a secure environment for everyone in your house.

Have Your Chimney Inspected by a Seasoned Chimney Sweep in South Carolina
Regular chimney inspections and cleanings prioritize safety and maintenance while providing peace of mind and reducing the risk of chimney fires. Plus, by having your wood fireplace inspected, you'll have peace of mind knowing it works when weather starts to freeze.

Protect Your Property with Chimney Cap Installation in Summerville, SC
If you've ever looked at a house and noted how great the top of their chimney looked, it's probably because they had an attractive chimney cap. Chimney caps and chase pans play a crucial role in both the functionality of a chimney system and the aesthetic appeal of a home's exterior. A well-designed chimney cap safeguards the chimney from animal intrusion, minimizes wind-induced downdraft, and is an essential component in preventing water entry, which can cause significant damage to chimneys.
If you're looking to add or replace your current chimney cap, you're in the right place. Our collection of custom chimney caps comes in a variety of styles and colors to match or supplement your home's beauty. Of course, as professional chimney sweepers in South Carolina, we also offer chimney cap repair and water prevention options where necessary.
How Do You Know When a Chimney Cap Needs Maintenance?
Your home's chimney cap is likely the highest point of your home, making it an easy feature to forget about when it comes to yearly maintenance or repair. That's unfortunate, because even small damage to your chimney and its cap can allow debris and water to enter. Do yourself a favor and examine your chimney cap regularly for the following red flags:
- Visible Cracks
- Loose Bricks
- Tiles Falling from Chimney
- Cracked Mortar Joints
- Rust in Fireplace
- More
If you notice any of the following signs, you should call Flowertown Gas Fireplace & Chimney Service for expert chimney cap repair.

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) — A sensory-friendly gym for children and teens will open in Summerville this weekend.
We Rock the Spectrum bills itself as a space for kids with autism, special needs, and neurotypical development.
Franchise owners Ray and Mandi Plesscher said they "fell in love" with the idea of opening their own gym after visiting a location in Louisiana with their son, Walker, who has autism.
"I walk in and on the wall, the first thing it says is the catchphrase: 'Finally a place where I never have to say I’m sorry' and it impacted me, profoundly, just as a parent,” Ray said.
Gym equipment includes a zip slider, and swings with textures like carpet and bubbles.

"There are things that kids with autism like," Ray said. "For instance, our son likes trucks, but he wants to turn them over and play with the wheels. There’s a rolling table with rollers on it that kids can get on and feel that on their body."
The gym will also feature therapy rooms, a teen room, a calming room, and eventually social groups.
“It’s a from-the-heart passion project,” Mandi said.
We Rock the Spectrum will open on Saturday, March 29 at 10 a.m. It is located at 10359 US-78 in Summerville. Admission is $17 per child.

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) - Summerville leaders are looking for the community’s input on what they would like to see happen to one of the largest tracts of land in downtown Summerville.
Plans to redevelop the 5.3 acres on 500 North Main Street have been discussed for years as developers, along with town and county officials, have been trying to figure out the best way to enhance the site while also preserving its history.
The Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber Foundation has opened up a community survey that will be facilitated by a consultant group, asking residents to rank their priorities for the redevelopment plans as leaders and developers move forward.
“We want community input because we want to get this right for future generations. It’s a very important part of Summerville. It’s the gateway into our town and we want to make sure we get it right,” President and CEO of the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce Rita Berry says.
The current zoning of the property is downtown-mixed use, which permits housing, retail, office space, and lodging.
However, the building on site, currently the county services building, used to be a hospital which community members have expressed wanting to see preserved. There is also a Veterans memorial honoring branches of the military and public service, including name-dedicated bricks, that sits in front of the building.
County officials say this project is an opportunity to expand the downtown Summerville experience from Hutchinson Square up to 500 North Main.
“The idea of putting something on this site that generates tax revenue that supports the county, that supports the town, is important for the long term vision. This is not a short-term, we’re going to do this and walk away and everything is going to be great,” Dorchester County Chairman David Chinnis says.
Chinnis says plans so far do include a park and keeping the county office building on site. He says there is also discussion about possible affordable housing.
“That is one of the things that we’ve told the developer we need. That needs to be in here,” Chinnis says.
Chinnis says that keeping the center portico of the old hospital is a top goal, but that with it sitting in the middle of the site it does make things more difficult.
“Quite frankly, it would be much simpler if we weren’t trying to conserve that central building. You clear the site off and you develop it the way it looks, the way some people say, well, I want it to look like this, I want it to look like that. That being in the center of the lot makes it challenging because now everything is being built around the outside edges,” Chinnis says.
Chinnis says ultimately the town has the final approval on what happens to the site.
The deadline for Summerville’s Board of Architectural Review to approve any plans has been extended to June 30.
The deadline for community members to fill out the survey is April 4. You can find the link here.
Leaders from the Chamber Foundation say that all responses are confidential. The survey does ask for name and address to make sure the responses are coming from constituent communities.

A walkup window ice cream shop with outdoor-only patio seating has opened in Summerville, offering two dozen handcrafted flavors every day.
Husband-and-wife duo Neil and Michelle Mazuranic came up with the idea to open a Bruster’s Real Ice Cream franchise, inspired by the location they frequented when they lived in Maryland.
“We wanted to do something that makes people happy and everybody who comes in to get ice cream is happy,” said Neil Mazuranic, a retired Army officer.
Bruster’s offers an oat milk-based non-dairy treat option, sherbet, sorbet, Italian ice, and ice cream cakes and pies to-go.
The Mazuranics hired 20 employees to staff the location, specifically choosing teenagers who have not previously held a job so they could learn about customer service and food service.
First started in 1989 offering small-batch ice cream, Bruster’s now has nearly 200 independently owned stores in 22 states and Guyana.
The Mazuranics were awarded the franchise for the Charleston market and plan to open additional locations.
Bruster’s is located at 143 Berkeley Circle near Azalea Square and is open from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. daily. Flavors are updated daily online.
Parker’s plans
Parker’s Kitchen has submitted its final site design approval to the Town of Mount Pleasant for what will be its first East Cooper location.
The convenience store and gas station is slated for the corner of George Browder Boulevard and U.S. Highway 17, near the intersection of Park West Boulevard.
Plans submitted to the town's Design Review Board show the Savannah-based chain’s signature Southern-style architecture with awnings and decorative lanterns.
Parker's opened its newest store on April 25 in Summerville.
Breakfast and books
Breakfast and brunch restaurant Ruby Sunshine in West Ashley will host a kids pop-up book sale May 3 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., in partnership with local nonprofit Charleston Friends of the Library.
Children will receive free bookmark-making kits and families can shop a selection of children's books with proceeds benefiting the library's programming.
Three local children’s book authors will be in attendance and sign copies of their work.
So long, Dolly
An ice cream shop and bubble and liege waffle bar has closed after just over a year.
The Dolly Llama Waffle Master, a local operator of the national franchise, went dark this spring in the Wando Crossing Shopping Center.
There was no announcement about the closing on the store’s social media pages. The space is now currently for lease.
Baked in
Grit Bakery is now open at Meeting and Huger streets selling fresh baked sweet and savory pastries, sourdough loafs and baguettes, drip coffee and cold brew.
It's open Wednesday-Friday from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m.–1 p.m. There’s free parking in the nearby Meeting Street Lofts garage.
Sip and Smoke
King's Leaf Cigars, a cigar lounge and separate beer and wine bar, will open its fifth Charleston-area location on May 3 in the Point Hope Commons shopping center off Clements Ferry Road.
The lounge features an air filtration system and a custom-built humidor. A grand opening celebration from 3-7 p.m. will feature cigar and beer pairings with Rusty Bull Brewing.
Bling Bling
A Columbia-based jewelry store that offers permanent jewelry welding services has opened at 835 Coleman Blvd in Mount Pleasant.
Sugar & Lola sells 14k and gold-filled chains, birthstones, initials and unique charms and more. It's open Monday–Friday from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
