HANAHAN, S.C. – The NC State women's golf team opens its 27th season this week at the 22nd annual Cougar Classic. The 54-hole tournament will take place from Monday, Sept. 7 to Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, South Carolina.

This marks the 20th year the NC State women's golf team will play at this tournament, which is a staple in the program's schedule. The 18 teams will play two rounds for 36 holes on Monday before concluding the tournament with 18 on Tuesday.

Monday will begin with an 8:50 a.m. shotgun start. NC State is paired with host College of Charleston and LSU. Yeamans Hall is a par 71, 6,269-yard course.

NC State's five-person lineup features two newcomers and three returners, including freshman Bonnie Lo and transfer Violeta Fernandez-Tagle. Marie Eline Madsen, Ellie Hildreth and Lindsay McGrath each competed in all 11 tournaments in 2025-26 and will return to the season-opening lineup at Yeamans Hall.

The Wolfpack finished No. 41 in the 2025-26 final Scoreboard Powered by Clippd Rankings. Based on last year's rankings, the Cougar Classic features six top 25 squads. Boston College, Clemson and Miami are the other ACC schools.

HANAHAN, S.C. (WCIV) — Thousands of dead fish were found floating in Turkey Creek and washing ashore in Hanahan, prompting an investigation by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources into what caused the mass die-off.

Residents reported seeing tens of thousands of menhaden, a small fish common to the area, floating in the creek Monday. Many of the fish became caught around docks and along the shoreline, creating a strong odor that residents said could be detected from nearby homes.

Robert Roe said he had never seen anything like it.

“Tens of thousands of menhaden” were floating across the creek, Roe said. He said fish continued coming out of the creek for hours as the tide fell.

“We called DNR because we've never seen anything like this,” Roe said.

Two children who saw the fish said they initially appeared to be small white spots on the water until they got closer. They also described a strong smell of dead fish throughout the area.

DNR officials took water samples and are investigating the cause of the fish kill. The agency had not provided an update as of Tuesday evening.

Extreme heat and low dissolved oxygen levels are among the possible causes, officials explained.

Fish kills can occur when warm water contains too little oxygen to support aquatic life. Warm water generally holds less dissolved oxygen than cooler water, and oxygen levels can fall further overnight.

During daylight hours, algae and aquatic plants produce oxygen through photosynthesis. At night, that process stops while plants and other organisms continue consuming oxygen through respiration. The combination can cause dissolved oxygen levels to fall and place additional stress on fish, an expert said.

Roe said he hopes the weather is responsible rather than contamination.

“That's something I think we could all live with rather than something that's chemical-related,” he said.

By Tuesday evening, higher tides had carried away many of the dead fish, though clusters remained around neighborhood docks and portions of the shoreline.

HANAHAN, S.C. (WCIV) — Hanahan Mayor Christie Rainwater spent Thursday defending her actions before a South Carolina State Ethics Commission panel as commissioners considered whether she violated state ethics laws during a 2022 land transaction involving city-owned property on Yeamans Hall Road.

The hearing focused on Rainwater's involvement in the deal after a commission for Carolina One Real Estate was left off the closing paperwork. At the time, Rainwater was serving as mayor while also working as a Realtor with Carolina One.

While the facts of the transaction were largely undisputed, commissioners repeatedly returned to a central question: should Rainwater have removed herself from the process once she became affiliated with the company receiving the commission?

During testimony, Rainwater acknowledged she helped correct the closing documents after realizing Carolina One was not listed to receive a commission on the settlement statement. She maintained that she was acting in the city's best interest and never personally received any portion of the commission. One commissioner asked Rainwater directly why she did not recuse herself from the transaction.

"Had the thought crossed my mind, right? I think if I had been a realtor when this whole thing started, my eyes would've been wide open," Rainwater responded.

Rainwater argued throughout the hearing that the issue was never about personal gain. Instead, she said she was trying to correct what she viewed as a clerical mistake before the sale was finalized.

"I stand before God and I know what I did was to protect the city of Hanahan," Rainwater told commissioners.

Later, she said failing to correct the paperwork could have exposed the city to legal problems.

"I know what I did was to protect the city of Hanahan. Had that clerical error not been corrected, we wouldn't be in an ethics room. We'd be in a courtroom right now with an actual non-frivolous lawsuit," the mayor said.

Rainwater also pushed back on the complaint itself, suggesting the case is part of a larger effort by political opponents to force her from office.

"Why are we here? Why are we here today?" she said. "I think that's a great question that everyone should ask."

She later added that the ongoing case has taken time and attention away from city business.

"I don't know what the future holds, but it's wasting time and resources from myself, from our council, and from our staff to be focused on these things."

After the hearing, Rainwater told reporters she remains confident in her actions and has no regrets about how she handled the situation.

"I can sleep very well at night knowing I did exactly what I needed to do for the residents," she said. "Those are the ones that elected me and those are the ones I serve."

Rainwater also addressed questions about her political future. Her current term expires this fall, and she has not announced whether she plans to seek reelection.

"I just haven't made that decision yet, but this case will have no bearing on that," she said.

The ethics panel did not issue a ruling Thursday. Commissioners instead took the matter under advisement and will review testimony, exhibits and legal arguments before issuing a written decision in the coming weeks. Until then, Rainwater will continue serving as mayor of Hanahan and says it is business as usual at City Hall.

HANAHAN — A forthcoming town center that's set to break ground soon has announced its initial list of tenants. It includes a pizzeria, an Italian-inspired market and wine bar, and the second location of a popular downtown coffee shop.

Blackwells Corner, whose name is a nod to a community hardware store that operated on the site for more than 75 years and shuttered in 2025, is a mixed-use real estate project in Hanahan. It will blend a walkable mix of dining, retail, fitness studios, salons and office space across roughly 40,000 square feet.

The owners of the long-envisioned town center, which Mayor Christie Rainwater called “transformational” in returning a vital corner of the city on Yeamans Hall Road near Remount Road, have landed its first four occupants.

A new wood-fired concept dubbed Untitled Pizza Co., a yet-to-be-named mercato and wine bar led by Cane Pazzo owner Mark Bolchoz, and Kudu Coffee & Wine, which has gained a dedicated following downtown at 4 Vanderhorst St., will eventually serve food and drinks at Blackwells Corner. Women's clothing shop Pineapple House Boutique also will join the development when it makes its anticipated debut in fall 2027.

"Every business here shares what we're trying to build," Blackwells Corner partner Michael Sivel said in a press release. "We weren't looking to simply fill space. We wanted operators who will give Hanahan the kind of local options residents have told us they want. This lineup reflects exactly that."

The news comes less than two weeks after Bolchoz announced plans to bring an Irish-influenced bar and restaurant to the former Dashi space on Remount Road, about one mile from Blackwells Corner's future 1279 Yeamans Hall Road address. His forthcoming third dining concept will further entrench the chef, who opened his debut restaurant at 1276 Yeamans Hall Road in June 2025, in the area between North Charleston and Goose Creek.

HANAHAN, S.C. (WCBD) – A long-discussed vision for a town center in Hanahan is moving closer to reality as developers break ground Thursday on Blackwells Corner, a mixed-use destination planned for the former Blackwells Hardware property.

When it opens, residents can expect the project to bring new dining, shopping, and community gathering spaces to the heart of the city. Previous reports included a pizzeria, wine bar, coffee bar, and boutique already planned for the space.

Located at a site long considered one of Hanahan’s central crossroads, Blackwells Corner is designed as a walkable development featuring approximately 40,000 square feet of restaurants, retail shops, fitness studios, salons, office space and outdoor gathering areas.

Plans call for six new buildings to be constructed alongside the existing TideLine Aquatics storefront. The development will also include a central event lawn and covered outdoor dining areas intended to host year-round community events and programming.

The project takes its name from Blackwells Hardware, a family-owned business that served the community for more than 75 years before closing in early 2025.

Developers say the goal is to create a recognizable downtown destination for Hanahan while expanding local options for dining, shopping, and entertainment.

“Through the city’s resident surveys, it became clear how much Hanahan needs a true town center,” said Chuck Woodward, who is leading the project. “We see Blackwells Corner as an opportunity to help bring that long-discussed vision to life in a way that truly serves the community.”

Hanahan Mayor Christie Rainwater said the project reflects years of community feedback calling for a centralized gathering place.

“It is a proud moment for our community to see this vital, historic part of Hanahan come back to life,” Rainwater said. “This transformation into a walkable district provides the sense of place our residents have long requested and deserve.”

City leaders and developers believe the project will help establish a downtown identity for the growing Berkeley County city while creating new opportunities for local businesses.
