Why Should You Have Your Gas Fireplace Serviced

At Flowertown Gas Fireplace and Chimney Service, one of the most common questions we get is whether or not a customer really needs to have their fireplace serviced. The two biggest reasons for doing so are appliance reliability and safety. The truth is it's very important to adhere to the manufacturer's guidelines and have the system inspected and serviced annually by a certified gas specialist.

Failure to do so could result in the production of lethal carbon monoxide gas, which is odorless and requires special equipment to detect. Additionally, gas leaks and improper venting can pose serious hazards, which is why inspection of the venting system, chimney, and fireplace is imperative. With proper maintenance and regular checks, you can enjoy the warmth of your gas hearth system with confidence and peace of mind.

If you haven't kept up with gas fireplace maintenance and believe something is wrong with your hearth or chimney, consider gas fireplace repair in Summers Corner, SC.

As utilities and lawmakers warn of rising demands for energy spurred by data centers, Santee Cooper approved next steps to add over 4,500 megawatts of power to South Carolina’s grid.

A majority of the new power comes from two plans: a 2,200 megawatt natural gas plant in Colleton County and the completion of the V.C. Summer nuclear reactors in Fairfield County.

The Santee Cooper Board of Directors met Friday morning in downtown Columbia. The group typically meets in Moncks Corner, near Charleston.

The board approved state-owned utility Santee Cooper’s role in building the natural gas plant in Canadys on a former coal plant. Santee Cooper will build the natural gas plant with Dominion Energy. The General Assembly allowed Santee Cooper and Dominion Energy’s partnership on the plant earlier this year. The two utilities will split the energy generated, with Santee Cooper owning 1100 megawatts.

Building the natural gas plant will cost about $5 billion, with each utility taking on half the cost, according to the meeting presentation. The natural gas plant is expected to be operational in the early 2030s, according to a news release.

A pipeline will have to be built through South Carolina for the natural gas plant, a point of concern for some residents and conservationists.

Santee Cooper’s board also approved a letter of intent for Brookfield Asset Management to complete two V.C. Summer nuclear reactors. The utility and SCE&G abandoned the project after spending $9 billion eight years ago, and customers are still paying for the failure on their energy bills. If completed, the nuclear reactors could add 2,200 megawatts of energy to the grid.

Two smaller projects also advanced Friday. A 300 megawatt battery energy storage system will be built and operated by a private company, Aypa Power, at the Jefferies Generation Station. While the battery energy storage system doesn’t create energy, it allows Santee Cooper to store and disperse generated power.

The board also approved procurement of two combustion turbines at Winyah Generating Station in Georgetown. The turbines can run on natural gas or fuel oil and will add 80-120 megawatts to the grid, according to a news release. The budget for the project is about $293 million, according to a presentation to the board.

A long-anticipated Publix supermarket is finally turning dirt in Summerville’s Summers Corner development at 1612 Beech Hill Road.

First announced in January, the project generated new buzz Nov. 23 after the neighborhood posted the news on its Facebook page that the site is finally under construction. The post garnering 900 likes and more than 200 shares in just days.

A spokesperson for the Lakeland, Fla.-based grocer said the store expects to hire about 140 employees.

The Publix will be the anchor tenant for the new retail center, with plans calling for a 50,800-square-foot supermarket and eight 1,200-square-foot suites.

At full buildout, Summers Corner is expected to exceed 7,500 homes.

On a related note, Publix will mark its return to Daniel Island next Wednesday at 7 a.m., after a nearly year-long absence that left DI without its own full-service grocery store. The chain closed its original location at 162 Seven Farms Road in late 2024 and rebuilt a larger supermarket in its place in less than 12 months.

Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday

Ruby Tuesday has pulled out of North Charleston leaving the chain with just one Lowcountry restaurant.

A sign on the door at 7400 Northside Drive directs customers to the West Ashley location at 1953 Savannah Highway. Company representatives did not respond to a request for comment.

Maryville, Tenn.-based Ruby Tuesday is owned NRD Capital, a private equity firm. The casual dining closed its Summerville location earlier this year.

The department store’s inspiration this year is “A Holiday on Holiday” concept, capturing “the golden glow of a retro holiday.”

The mid-century-inspired vignettes include glittering garments, glowing pink flamingos and rotating disco balls that channel holiday department-store spectacles in major cities.

Market to market

A food truck is opening a brick-and-mortar downtown.

Luther’s Market & Eatery, known for its pastas, casseroles and sauces, will take over 227 Rutledge Ave., formerly home to Pinot & Provisions, which closed Oct. 31.

The new tenant is expected to open in January and will offer global comfort foods from the mother-and-son duo of Kiki Luthringshausen and Hudson Luthringshausen. Until then, their pastas and sauces are currently available via their food truck and at Corner Store, a grab-and-go market that opened this summer in West Ashley in the former home of Taco Bartina.
