Summerville’s schedule for the first three weeks of the 2025 football season is arguably the toughest for any team in the Lower State.

The Green Wave opened its season Aug. 25 with a 35-30 win over visiting Stratford. Down by a single score in the final quarter, the Knights had an opportunity for one last scoring drive. They moved the ball to Summerville’s 31-yard line with just more than four minutes remaining. The Green Wave defense, though, recorded a 12-yard sack on third down and an incomplete pass on fourth-and-22, squashing the Stratford threat.

Max Stafford, who transferred from a Florida school before summer practice, made his Green Wave debut at quarterback. The senior completed 11-of-14 pass attempts for 237 yards and three touchdowns.

Junior running back Jayvyn Williams rushed for 162 yards and a TD while Jaiden Kelly-Murray and Cam Grayson both rushed for more than 50 yards. Kelly-Murray led the Summerville receivers with four catches for 77 yards and a touchdown. Teru Davis had three receptions for 76 yards and a TD. Williams had two receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown.

Running back Maliq McGowan finished with more than 200 total yards, a rushing touchdown and a TD reception for the Knights. Quarterback Jachin Davis passed for 191 yards and ran for 26 more yards.

Junior linebacker Eli Pressley led the Wave tacklers with 11 stops. Jordan Ravenell had 10 tackles, and J.T. Williams had nine, including two for a loss. Demarcus King also had two stops for a loss. Ravenell, Williams, King and Carson Vaughn each had a sack.

The Knights and Wave went back and forth all night. After the Knights opened the scoring, Grayson raced around the left side for 28 yards and Summerville’s first score. Stratford regained the lead moments later following a 48-yard reception by Jayden Lee. From there, Davis made a short scoring run to put the Knights on top 14-7.

The Wave responded again in the final minute of the half when tight end Zion Jenkins grabbed a shovel pass and dashed 21 yards to the end zone for a 14-14 score.

In the second half, Davis hauled in a TD pass from Stafford to give the Green Wave a 21-14 lead. Following a long kickoff return by D.J. Grant, McGowan raced into the end zone on a 20-yard run to even it, 21-21. Then Williams caught a short pass and got loose for a 54-yard TD to put the Green Wave back on top. Shortly after, Stratford again tied the score on a 1-yard TD run by Davis. However, Ravenell got through to block the extra-point kick.

Williams scored his second touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run with 11:35 left. Nate Beaver’s fifth successful extra point gave the Green Wave a 35-27 lead.

Other Games

Summerville, ranked No. 3 in the latest High School Football Media 5A poll, hosts South Florence at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29. The Bruins are the top-ranked 4A team and the defending state champion.

South Florence will also enter the game with a 1-0 record, having opened its season with a 37-6 victory over rival West Florence. The Bruins returned their quarterback, and he has a number of weapons who help him move the ball.

Then Summerville hosts rival Berkeley at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5. The Stags always have talent and always get up for their games against the Green Wave. The series is one of the oldest in the state.

Berkeley is not ranked in the latest poll, but did receive votes for 5A.

The Stags opened their season with a 35-21 victory at Ashley Ridge. Berkeley quarterback Henry Rivers rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another. Using their stable of rushers, the Stags chewed up more than 300 yards on the ground.

Most of the first half of the game belonged to the Stags. Rivers connected with Elijah Mitchell for a 36-yard TD pass with just more than two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Ryland Curwen hit his first of three successful PAT kicks to tie the game.

Cameron McCue intercepted an Ashley Ridge pass on the Swamp Foxes’ ensuing drive to give the Stags possession inside the Swamp Foxes’ 30-yard line. That led to a six-yard touchdown run by Rivers early in the second quarter and a 14-7 Stags’ lead.

Berkeley went on to score on a 10-yard run by Rivers and a seven-yard run by Jahmir Heyward to take a 28-7 lead into halftime. It added a TD run by Rivers in the second half.

The team is talented and physical, particularly in the trenches, so it will be a good test for Summerville. However, the Stags gave up some big plays at Ashley Ridge. Summerville has explosive capabilities so that may be something that factors into this year’s chapter of the cross-county line rivalry.

The Summerville Museum and Research Center is inviting the community to embrace the fall season with a full calendar of events, activities and celebrations. From lectures and children’s programs to an inaugural homes and gardens tour, the museum is welcoming visitors to “experience the magic of fall.”

The museum’s Kids Club kicks off the season with a “Rockin’ Around Scavenger Hunt” from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13. Children will follow clues to uncover Summerville’s rich history, tracing figures transported by river rocks throughout the grounds.

On Thursday, Sept. 18, at the museum’s booth during the monthly Third Thursday from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Little Main, the museum will honor Dr. Charles Sheppard, highlighting his role in establishing Summerville as the “Birthplace of Sweet Tea.”

The museum will also host its September Lecture Series from 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, as historians Robert Scarlett and Dr. Ed West will present research about the Sawmill Branch canal, exploring its creation and continuing significance.

Looking ahead, the museum announced its largest fundraiser of the year: The Inaugural Summerville Historic Homes and Gardens Tour, scheduled for March 6-7, 2026. The weekend will feature a Garden Party at Linwood, historic walking tours, trolley rides and home tours centered at Bethany Methodist. The Flower Power Coffee Cart will also serve specialty drinks at the museum throughout the weekend. Tickets will be available online in October, and volunteers are being sought to serve as docents.

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) - Flash flooding throughout the Lowcountry has now displaced three families from Greenwave Apartments in Summerville.

Although this area is not considered a flood zone, nearby ditches may be to blame due to potential drainage issues.

Tenant Amanda Welsh, a single mother with three children and two dogs, says she’s homeless and now living in a hotel.

“The water was rising pretty quickly. My children, along with both of my dogs, had to climb out the window. The door would not open. The water was pushed up so high onto the door that the door would not open.” Welsh said.

She explained how water was coming in from the front and back doors and her children were helpless because she was away at work.

“My dog ended up having a seizure because of being so scared,” Welsh said.

Welsh described her home as a total loss.

“I’m discouraged. I’m numb. I’m hurt. I’m sad. I’m angry. I don’t know where to start.” Welsh said.

Landlord of Greenwave Apartments Vernon Baer says he took a lot of pride in this building and now it’s ruined.

“I hope I can make it through it. I hope that I don’t go bankrupt in the process.” Baer said.

The damage inside the homes has left the units unlivable due to the water and potential for mold.

“Water rose so fast it actually turned my dumpster into a boat,” Baer said.

Many other items were also displaced around the apartment building.

Baer and Welsh said they have reached out to agencies to seek assistance, but have not received any.

“It makes me feel frustrated. It makes me feel that more needs to be done and we need to be able to have something that can help these people when they’re in this situation.” Baer said.

“We woke up Friday morning to a normal life and came home to nothing. It is a complete and total disaster.” Welsh said.
